History of Cypress Sawmill

Cypress Sawmill began sawmilling over 45 years ago at its present site, 700 Kahikatea Flat road in Waitoki, Silverdale. It started as a father, son partnership between Ian and David McGlashan trading as "DI & IW McGlashan – Cypress Farm Sawmill".

Established on the "Cypress Farm" cheviot stud sheep farm of Ian and Jo McGlashan, the sawmill cut timber for the farm and the local community.

Through the late 60’s and early 70’s Cypress Farms focused on propagating a large quantity of Leyland Cypress trees from cuttings which were sold and rail freighted to nurseries throughout the North Island.

David’s brother Jim McGlashan joined the business as a partner in the early 1980’s. Milling at that time was done using a single saw vertical break down, and a flat belt driven breast bench.

Today, the major emphasis is on macrocarpa (botanical name: cupressus macrocarpa) from where, along with history, Cypress Sawmill Ltd takes it name. The business has expanded and now offers a wide variety of products and services.

We now supply macrocarpa, pine, other timber and services to a wide variety of builders, merchants, home handyman, furniture makers, farmers, landscapers, the general public and end users all over New Zealand and the Pacific.
